All that glitters is not gold. But it doesn’t have to be solid gold to be fabulous. This week’s fresh to market vintage features three picks that are golden but not gold. Napier is a storied maker of costume jewelry for good reason. Their goldtone metal and fine design remains in classic condition for generations. Both fine and souvenir china designers add a touch of gold to the rim of pieces to elevate them. Some people avoid gold banded dinnerware because it can’t go in the dishwasher or the microwave, but a gold band on a souvenir piece is just fine. And while Tut’s actual death mask was made of solid gold, the commemorative mask with a matte finish is a golden decor touch.

Cushing Academy Memento China Set
Three piece set of plates and cup, a memento of Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA. These were made in England by Foley China/Wileman and Co. Fenton England pre WWI. These items would be more for decor, rather than use. The school was opened in 1875 and continues operation today. This would be a fine gift for school alumni or the family of W. O. Parker, who owned a shop in that name in Ashburnham where these pieces were originally sold.
Interesting to note, if I am reading history correctly, Wileman and Co. was one of the legendary Stoke-on-Trent potteries from 1872-1925, after which the name was changed to Shelley.

Napier Goldtone Brooch w/ Center Pearl
Napier made loads of contemporary styled costume jewelry for generations. The company is still in business. This brooch is a typical classic look in goldtone with a center faux half pearl and swirled design. It would make a beautiful accent on a blazer or sweater.

1970s Reed and Barton Tutankhamun Mask Replica
From 1977-1979, the Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition toured the US and it was a showstopper. Magnificent golden relics from Tut’s tomb, which was already the stuff of legend, drew massive crowds at every stop. Many commemoratives, from novelty to museum quality were made, including this Reed and Barton miniature of Tutankhamun’s gold death mask. The boy king continues to have a devoted following, this would be an awesome addition to any Tut fan’s collection.
