May Flowers – Vintage Picks of the Week

The Mayflower or the trailing arbutus was selected in 1918 to be the State Flower of Massachusetts. It does tend to make its appearance in May, so that makes it one of the earlier wildflowers to show us winter might be finally over. Here’s the conundrum – is that how it got its name or is it named after the famous Pilgrim ship?

Q: If April showers bring May Flowers, what do May Flowers bring?

A: Pilgrims!

Flower Power Mod Top

I would be thrilled to wear this top paired with some white cropped jeans. It would also look great with a dirndl style or a line solid color skirt.  If you look at this pattern, I believe you may have about a dozen choices. I think it would look great at a cook out or even just a casual shop at my local thrift.  It also would play very nicely with a denim jacket. Floral Bowl Plate with Stylized Flowers

My eyes were instantly drawn to the variety of petal shapes and colors of the flowers and the graceful leaves. The dark stems adds sone art deco drama while the gold adds all of its elegance. It was designed by Wolfgang Bauer. The Rosenthal company earned a reputation for encouraging artists to work in its studio to create designs both for the shape and the decoration of its porcelain in celebration of the arts. I might put this on a coffee table with nothing in it or even hang it on a small piece of wall at eye level.

Georgia O’Keefe 1935 Sunflower, Book Page

I love this beautiful image of a single sunflower. Its saturated colors bring life, hope and cheer on the darkest of days. I would have this beauty framed and would hang it in my little corner of the house. It would warm my heart. At first glance you see its simplicity but it is far from that. I think I see a huge cosmic eye in the seed center. Each petal has a personality. Its seeds are nutritious food for birds, animals and people.
