Fresh to Market Vintage: 4/28/2024

Conjure the allure of the front porch on a warm weather evening up in your mind. Listening to the crickets or tree frogs tuning up for the night or maybe there’s a baseball game on the radio. You’re swinging on a porch swing or reclining in an Adirondack chair; it’s the kind of scene that you see in those movies that make you feel warm and cozy inside. This week’s fresh to market vintage has a way to be there virtually, if you don’t have a front porch to live out this idyll scene.

Doll furniture and doll houses are a way that kids and grown ups create their visions of their perfect home. Whether it’s a simple plastic house with plastic furniture or an elaborately built and decorated home curated by an adult, doll houses never fail to enchant. The cast iron pieces from Selective Salvage don’t need a house to make them capture a perfectly enchanting summer evening. Even sitting on a shelf, they could capture the feeling of a summer twilight on the porch watching fireflies. And oh how we love those nights…

What else does this week’s fresh to market vintage hold? Have a look.

Watertown, NY Antique Souvenir Pitcher

Charming little elegant porcelain souvenir from Watertown, NY, meant more for display rather than serving. The number 10 is on the base but no backstamp. It shows the view of Washington street at the Roswell P Flower Monument and an avenue bordered by elegant trees. 3.5” tall, embossed and elegant. Dates from before WWI.

Cast iron Kilgore Dollhouse Table and Three Rocking Chairs c 1920s

A mixed lot of four pieces of the charming dollhouse furniture the Kilgore Manufacturing Co. was known for producing in the 1920s. Founded in 1912 as a producer of cap pistols, Kilgore became a leading supplier of munitions and pyrotechnic devices during WW II. Happily, we have reminders like these of the kinder, gentler side of their product lines.

Mixed Lot – Cast Iron Kilgore Dollhouse Furniture, $95

Alice Books in a Slipcase, 1946 Editions

Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have been through millions of versions and interpretations, but the hill I will die on is that if it doesn’t have Tenniel’s original illustrations, it’s a sham version. This slipcase has both books, with the original illustrations but – plot twist – they have been hand colored for these editions. And that is a very beautiful thing.

That’s this week’s fresh to market vintage. There is no small irony in actually having a rabbit hole in the post this week since many weeks we describe rabbit holes we fell down researching a vintage something.

We don’t bring you rabbit holes every week—we don’t even fall down them every week. But we do bring you three posts a week, each serving up something to tantalize your vintage spirit. Never miss a post! Subscribe to our email newsletter.
