The countdown is on until Christmas which means it’s time to begin shopping for something special for the guys in my life. Vintage is my gift of choice so here are the nicely aged pieces that I would love to give to my four favorite fellows.
Folk Art Hand Carved Decoy (c 1900s)
For my main man: We met in college and married shortly after graduating. My favorite wedding gift (a Delft juicer set) came from my grandparents and is special because they received it when they were married. I believe that gift is what set us off on a lifetime of collecting antiques. We both love one-of-a-kind folk art plus he collects decoys, a combo that makes this whimsical handmade bird the perfect gift for a very hard-to-buy-for guy.
Folk Art Carved Walnut and Maple Pliers
For our son: He’s a contractor and is also a woodworker so I know he would appreciate the talent it took to create this fanciful pair of split-joint pliers. He’s in the process of renovating their family home so I trust he can find a special wall to display this piece as the work of art it is.
Woodburned “Croc o Mower” Mechanical Toy
For my oldest grandson: He is interested in becoming an engineer and at the age of 13 has the typical teenager’s sense of humor. What better gift than a mechanical wood-burned “Croc o Mower” featuring a crocodile head and covered with quotes including “Use Only Hi-Test BugOSaur Juice”? I think his grandpa would love it too.
Memphis Style Ray Gun Sculpture
For his little brother: He has been a Star Wars fan since he was two and now, at the age of seven, can spend hours drawing futurist-looking spaceships. I think this “found object” ray gun built from particle board, plastic lids and beads is right up his alley.
