An Antique Love Letter

We bought this unusual mirror at an estate sale in rural South Dakota back in the late ’70s. At the time we appreciated it as a handmade piece of folk art and it has remained in our personal collection all these years.

I recently posted a photo of it on a social media platform commenting on the original meaning of the “swastika” figure.

What a treat it was to learn the other figures carved into the frame also have meaning. Their meaning, coupled with the story the auctioneer told us,  makes this piece, in effect, a handmade love letter.

You can read the detail of what I learned about the hidden symbols in “The Secret Decoder Ring“.
