Vintage Chip and Dip Bowls for the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl will be almost unescapable this week, saturating television, social media, newspapers and the supermarket, where towering displays of chips will loom large, tempting with their salty deliciousness. Nacho chips, potato chips, highly processed multi-grain chips…all the chips will be there. Chips are to the Super Bowl what duct tape is to a leak in a pipe, they need each other to be complete. And you know what goes with chips? Dip. So in honor of the Super Bowl, we present some super vintage chip and dip bowls, worthy of one of the top ten most watched sporting events in the world.

We’ll start our survey of vintage chip and dip bowls with some simple glass models. It doesn’t have to be showy to make a splash on your coffee table. These three are big game worthy, and could also double for serving fruit salad and whipped cream or shrimp and cocktail sauce or even salad and dressing.

It’s impossible to post about vintage chip and dip bowls without including wood, pottery and ceramic sets. And don’t sleep on studio art pottery pieces from the 80s and 90s, there are many beautiful ones, all unique and made by hand.

There’s no point in having a bowl for dip if you don’t have dip to put in it. The reigning queen of all dips is Lipton Onion Soup Mix and sour cream. Nothing can compete, nothing would even bother. And we’re just going to say it, store bought onion dip is a pale substitute. Conceding that point, for your culinary approval, we present some dip recipes from the Kraft Cheese Cookbook (1978).
