10 DIY Kitschmas Craft and Decor Ideas

Here are 10 brief and breezy ideas to make your own Kitschmas decor using vintage items and your imagination.

Turn a Tin into a Bottle Brush Tree Holder

This great little cocoa tin would be just nifty if filled with some florist foam to hold decor. Go to your favorite craft store, or if you’re lucky, your craft hoard, and see what you can find. I am thinking two bottle brush trees of different sizes and perhaps a tiny deer. Tuck some cotton batting around the base of the trees and deer and maybe top with some snowy white glitter. I would add some glittery small scale garland or pipe cleaner to finish off the rim at the top. Glue it if this is going to be a forever decor to keep it stable on the table or shelf. You can scale up things even more with a 2 gallon vintage look Christmas popcorn tin with the same sort of trees etc. The tin and inspiration came from CherryCreekAttic on Etsy for $19.99.

Hitch Two Reindeer to a Toy Volkswagen Beetle or Bus

Get a toy VDub just the right scale to these two dears, although something bigger could be funny. Decorate the beetle or van with hippie decals and glitter, add some gold ribbon harnesses to connect them all and there you have some fun decor. TheLogChateau hopes you like these “dears” offered on Etsy for 179.99

Make Some Family Portraits into Kitschmas Tree Ornaments

Use these 10 reflectors as “frames” for family faces. You may need to work on the computer to get just the right scale. If that isn’t to your liking get some small cardboard discs and glue on some on some silver paper. Put the initials of your friends or family members and the year on the silver disc, string some hanging string through a pin hole you make at the top. You can keep them or give them away as a little memento. They are in ThePurpleOttoman’s Shop on Etsy for $28.

Party With the Penguins

I would take these darling girls all dressed up for a party and give them some tuxedoed companions in the form of Hagen Renaker Penguins! LOTS of Penguins! Create a small tablescape of a few boxes of different heights and cover with glittery cotton batting. Be certain to tuck it down to the table to create a reasonable looking environment. Place the girls on a box or on the base and then have some fun with placing the penguins. You can even make a little sign saying “Party with the Penguins.” Now that’s Kitschmas with a capital K! BluegillModern is offering this scarce bevy of beauties for $750 on Etsy.

Here are some other Kitschmas ideas:

  • Match up a beer stein and brewski with a kitschy bowl filled with beer nuts for just the right Jolly Old Elf snack.
  • Find a tacky (or a funny) toilet lid cover for a laugh for bathroom visitors.
  • Stock up on fake snowballs for an inside snowball fight.
  • Tuck a little bed fit for a mouse out of the way for someone to discover.
  • Buy a book of bad Christmas jokes or have a contest and write your own.
  • Also consider grouping damaged kitschy items in a group with strategically placed decor or snow or tiny gift and allow them to continue to brighten up your Kitschmas!
