8 Vintage Wedding Movies We Love

It’s wedding season! Cue the popcorn! Cue the damp tissues! Settle in for a good cinematic escape with one of the vintage wedding movies we love! (Okay, technically they aren’t all vintage, but close enough.)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

A lighthearted film from 2002 about a shockingly old (30) Greek woman who falls for a non-Greek teacher. Hilarity ensues. It is the highest grossing wedding film of all time, despite its low budget and relatively unknown cast (Nia Vardalos and John Corbett star). More proof that love conquers all.

Favorite Quote: [Gus Portokalos] “You know, the root of the word Miller is a Greek word. Miller come from the Greek word “milo,” which is mean “apple,” so there you go. As many of you know, our name, Portokalos, is come from the Greek word “portokali,” which mean “orange.” So, okay? Here tonight, we have, ah, apple and orange. We all different, but in the end, we all fruit.”

Wedding Crashers (2005)

This romantic comedy starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn is hilarious! This duo is a perfect fit for this movie and you can’t help but laugh. After crashing many weddings to meet girls, they finally meet the loves of their lives. And yes, it’s not quite as old as our other vintage wedding movies but we think it is close enough to count.

Favorite Quote: [John Beckwith] “Rule #1: Never Leave a Fellow Crasher Behind.”

Steel Magnolias (1989)

This is one of those vintage wedding movies will have you laughing and crying. It’s a movie of friendship, a range of emotions, gossiping and sharing. This all-star cast of women makes you wish you were one of their friends, helping to prepare for the big (and very pink) wedding. This movie is a “must-see”.

Favorite Quote: [M’Lynn] “I find it amusing. Men are supposed to be made out of steel or something. I just sat there. I just held Shelby’s hand. There was no noise, no tremble, just peace. Oh god. I realize as a woman how lucky I am. I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out. It was the most precious moment of my life.”

Monster In Law (2005)

You can’t help but laugh during this movie! Charlotte meets the man of her dreams, Kevin. Unfortunately, Kevin’s merciless mother will do anything to destroy their relationship. Jane Fonda (the mother) and Jennifer Lopez (Charlotte) play their roles perfectly. A fun movie!

Favorite Quote: [Viola Fields] “Let’s go someplace near the ocean and drink lunch.”

Betsy’s Wedding (1990)

All Betsy Hopper (played by Molly Ringwald) wanted was a simple wedding but her father (played by Alan Alda) wanting to impress the in laws just keeps adding on lavish amounts of ridiculous details so it becomes the wedding from hell! Loved the ending. Loved Molly’s sense of fashion.

The Philadelphia Story (1940) and High Society (1956)

Choose your all-star cast [Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart] or [Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra]. Choose [straight comedy] or [musical comedy]. You can’t go wrong with either of these classic rom-coms based on the same play about a society wedding being held at the bride’s house which is conveniently located next to her ex-husband’s house with the added bonus of a tabloid newspaper reporter and photographer who aren’t exactly thrilled to be covering the event. Oh, and a Father who is an Uncle and an Uncle who is a Father…you know, screwball comedy identity plot essentials. Both are classic vintage wedding movies.

The Princess Bride (1987)

The plot of this classic comedy isn’t all that complicated. You can sum it up as true love with a side order of pirates, evil princes, outlaws, evil counts, magical healers and R.O.U.S.s. Guaranteed to become a favorite. Guaranteed to be quoted by you more often than you will ever imagine. This is one of those vintage wedding movies that even the RomCom averse in your home will love.

Favorite quote:  [Grandpa, voiceover] “That day, she was amazed to discover that when he was saying “As you wish”, what he meant was, “I love you.” And even more amazing was the day she realized she truly loved him back.”
