Vintage Picks of the Week – Vintage Embroidery

Vintage embroidery can come in many forms. Once a way to embellish and beautify plain clothing or household linens, it was also a way for one to show off their needle skills. Embroidered works range from an antique sampler to a decorated pair of jeans and most anything in between. Once learning embroidery was part of regular lessons for young girls, but with machine embroidery and modernization, things have changed. Embroidery has become a hobby, rather than an essential skill.  Hand embroidered items show off one’s individuality as well as showcase the time and effort that went into creating a usable piece of art.

This week’s vintage picks are brought to you by Pam of Vintage Renude.

Crewel Embroidery Winter Scene

Why I’m drawn to this piece: Some time back in the mid-70s I purchased a similar embroidery kit and started work on it. To this day, I still haven’t completed it. It sits languishing in the back of the closet waiting for me to pick it back up and finish it. Some day perhaps, if my eyesight hasn’t given out before I decide it’s time.

Rainbow Embroidered Denim Jacket

What makes this special: This jacket brings me back to my young teenage years when every piece of denim required some form of personalization. Be it embroidery, sewing alterations, or bedazzling with buttons and rhinestones. Each clothing item became unique owing to my talents and ability at the time.

Vintage Embroidered Throw Pillow Cover

Why I Love This: This type of embroidery reminds me of my grandmother. I definitely have a soft spot for items like these as evidenced by my collection of vintage embroidered linens. Table runners, dish towels, pillowcases, and doilies are among my stacks of hand-embroidered lovelies.

  1. I love the embroidered pieces you’ve shown and the nostalgia we feel when we see handcrafted items like our mothers and grandmothers once made. I, too, have many unfinished pieces, but also see some of my work in people’s homes, because I gifted most of my projects, especially counted cross-stitch. I loved doing crewelwork, because it seemed to ” work-up” faster, and I made pillow covers and pictures with sayings. I particularly love embroidered tablecloths and embroidered crocheted-edged handkerchiefs and dresser scarves. I hope when I’m older and have time, I’ll still have the ability to make these things! Your blog is a great resource for me! Love it!
