Vintage Hot Pants – Vintage Picks of the Week

Hot pants were a trend in the 1970s. Short shorts are always a summer trend among teens and twenty somethings. But in the 1970s, they were called “hot pants” and they were a THING.

Many had patch pockets on front and button up flies. Cuffs at the hem, another popular design feature. Denim, polyester, corduroy and suede were common fabrics. Short enough to scandalize? Absolutely. Ah the memories for those of us who were there.

In honor of the warm weather, we present fashion choices for a Hot Pants Summer, 1970s style.

1970s Knit Hot Pants

Sage green knit hot pants offered by arsenickittyvintage on Etsy, $55.

Why this is awesome: Polyester knit is nothing new. It’s always been easy to care for and less expensive that natural materials. It can also be super flattering to wear. Add in that belt buckle and this summer essential is vintage bliss.

What I would wear this with: White go-go boots and a striped top. Maybe a white jacket too.

1970s White Denim Hip Hugger Hot Pants

1970s white denim hip hugger hot pants by TimeBabyVintage on Etsy, $58.

Why this is awesome: White denim was the ultimate fabric to show off your Coppertone tan. Patch pockets, check!

What I DID wear with this: Maybe some gladiator sandals, the kind with a chunky heel and long suede straps that wrap up the legs. On top? Probably a novelty tee shirt with a witty quote from popular 1970s comedian Flip Wilson, “What you see is what you get.”

1970s Crochet Hot Pants Pattern

Patons Book 999 PDF instant download from PDFPatternsCentral on Etsy, $3.27.

More styles from the same book.

Why this is awesome: Crochet yourself your own outfit–what could be better? Having your mom or gramma or favorite aunt crochet it for you!

How I would wear this: Exactly as shown. Exactly.

If you’re a woman of a certain age and this week’s picks bring back fond memories of summer days and nights from the 1970s, feel free to send a link to this post to your children just to let them know that you once wore short shorts. Will it generate an image they simply can’t forget? Possibly. Making it entirely worthwhile.

  1. Loved my hot pants and distinctly remember where I got them and what they looked like. It’s funny but some of girls volleyball ‘shorts’ worn now resemble hot pants! Thanks for your site.
