We love the cooler temperatures in New England’s autumn, when apples are ready for harvest. My husband loves apples, so this is his favorite season. We enjoy frequent visits to a Cold Spring Orchard in Belchertown, MA, an extension of the University of Massachusetts Agricultural Experimental Station founded in 1882. He particularly loves buying a selection of the antique varieties of apples. His particular favorite is called the Hudson Golden Gem. Did you know that the old apple varieties were developed to have particular attributes to them that make the best pies, the best cider or the best to store last for exceptionally long storage?
I am using this apple theme to connect you with some lovely apple themed items that you can “pick” online.
Apple Cookie Jar
This vintage cookie jar is ready to hold some sweet treats for family and friends. I love the vibrant color and, of course, the iconic shape. It has some wear from decades of use which shows how loved and cherished it was. It is priced at $65 and offered on Etsy by Starlingrarities.
1950s Apple Print Novelty Fabric
A joyous novelty print that combines apples, music and dancing and is in lovely vintage condition. If you like smaller pieces of fabric to inspire you, this is the one. Make a hat or a bib or panel for an apron or use it in a few quilt squares. You can pluck it up for $8 in MYCLUTTER, a shop on Etsy.
Sterling & Abalone Apple Earrings and Pendant
These earrings and pendant are a modern take on apples made with sterling silver. I love the soft glow of the abalone and the crisp curves of the sterling leaves. Their design encourages year round wearability and elegance. These are in the Etsy shop TheSterlingMenagerie and are priced at $55.
Anthropomorphic Salt & Pepper Shaped Apples
Are you drawn to these funny apples giving each other the side eye? Spice up the kitchen, or should I say Kitschen, with these two smiling faces. I find it to be more difficult to find anthropomorphic items in the wild lately because this sort of collectible is wildly sought after. Go to Etsy and AntiquesMontana to pick these two up for $55.
Apple Blossoms Perfume In Original Antique Bottle
This lovely antique bottle once contained the essence of apple blossoms. An apple orchard in the spring has the most enticing sweet fragrance to attract bees and other pollinators, with a slight hint of apple hidden in its scent. The bottle is embossed with the Colgate & Co. logo and it still has a label and stopper. A great gift for an antique scent bottle collector, which can be found on Etsy for $45 in the LenettsCollections shop.
Speaking of all things apple, check out my posts on cider wassail and Marlborough Pie.
