Old Fashioned Oatmeal, Nut and Raisin Cookies – the perfect snack

Are you hankering for a snack? A flavor from your childhood? I’ll just bet that some old fashioned oatmeal cookies would taste fine about now. Maybe with a glass of milk?

The original recipe that my grandmother used has long since been lost but I knew where to look to get the basic recipe ingredients and I could easily add them with her tweaks. (You know too – the back of the lid on the Quaker Oats box.)

These cookies truly are easy to make and I’ll be that you have most of the items already in your pantry! So… let’s get baking!

Old Fashioned Oatmeal, Nut and Raisin Cookies

The ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup + 3 tablespoons softened butter
  • 1/2 cup (firmly packed please) brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • dash nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1-1/2 cup quick oats

The hardware needed:

Oven, large mixing bowl, handheld mixer (or stand mixer – just be careful not to over mix), measuring cups and spoons, cookie sheets and a tablespoon or small scoop.

Mixing and baking directions:

Oven temp 350 degrees.

In your bowl and with your handheld mixer cream the butter and sugar together until they are creamy. Add the next two ingredients (eggs and vanilla) and mix well. Add the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg and mix well. Finally add the oats, raisins, and nuts and give a final mix.

Drop the dough by tablespoonfuls onto your UNgreased cookie sheets.

Bake 8 – 10 minutes or until light brown. Let sit on cookie sheet for a couple of minutes then remove to a wire rack. Cool completely before storing. Be sure to store in a container that seals well!

Yields approximately 2 dozen cookies.

Substitutions and such:

We all know you can substitute the walnuts for whatever nut you care for, or leave them out altogether but think about these for a while.

  • maple syrup ( the REAL stuff please) for some or all of the sugar – this will yield a gooey-er cookie
  • dried cherries for the raisins (what!?!) oh, they are yummy!
  • leave out the raisins, nuts, cinnamon, and nutmeg and add in sweetened coconut and pineapple
  • replace the cinnamon and nutmeg with ginger (spice powder) and get really crazy and delete the egg in favor of canned pumpkin and leave out the raisins

I could go on and on with this. In case you haven’t guessed, I love cookies!
