Knitting and crocheting from vintage patterns gives you the opportunity to have a true vintage look with modern fibers. Vintage handmade sweaters are not hard to find, but vintage handmade hats, mittens and scarves are scarce as vintage Chanel at your local thrift or yard sale. It makes sense, those kinds of winter accessories probably made their way to the textile recycling bin in the sky since they were used a lot and probably showed it. No matter, you can still make a winter vintage headband for yourself or for those on your holiday giving list (now is the time!)
Bernat Hats, Scarves and Mittens (1977) is a treasure trove of awesome ways to keep your head warm. We’ll be sharing the patterns for. a few of them in coming weeks, but we are starting with this nifty little winter vintage headband.
As for what yarn to use, Bernat Krysta was a bulky weight yarn, category 5. Big Berella Bulky is a super bulky yarn, category 6. Since they different weights and yet the same needles are recommended, knitting a swatch is important.
With only 26 stitches in width and only 66 rows for length, this winter vintage headband would knit up quickly enough for you to to make one for everyone on your giving list and even a few people who aren’t. The simple design lends itself to creative embellishing, imagine adding a vintage brooch to the center front.
We love vintage knit and crochet patterns. Knit yourself a 1950s hat or dickey. Or knit yourself a 1960s mini dress (in 6 hours!) or crochet a powder room poodle. Or surprise a man in your life with a 1970s knit tank top. (We guarantee he’ll be surprised.)
