Style counts in skiing, both in how you handle the slope and how you look on the lift. In the 1970s, bright colors and color blocked stripes ruled skiwear. And aviator shades, preferably mirrored with bright colored plastic frames. But the crowning glory, the thing that topped the whole look off, was the hat. Commonly striped in some way, the 1970s ski toque tapered to three peaks on top, one fore, one aft and one straight up. It was THE hat.
For spring skiing, nylon wind shirts and close fitting sweaters were popular, with the toque on top.
There are lots of great vintage ski parkas, overalls, sweaters and wind shirts from vintage sellers. And there are hats too, but why not surprise the skiers in your life by knitting them a 1970s ski toque from one of our fave booklets from 1977.
Your classic 1970s ski toque might need classic 1970s skiwear colors. Try a navy blue hat with red and white stripes. Or an orange hat with lime and grape stripes. Or yellow hat with green and white stripes. The internet is rich with vintage skiing images for inspiration.
The original yarn for this project, Bernat Berella Sportspun, was a DK light worsted acrylic yarn. Knitted on size 5 needles, there is plenty of time to knit up a few for your friends who live in the overlap center of the Venn diagram of skiers and vintage lovers.

I was just looking for a knitting pattern that would replicate the Moriarty Hat of the 70s. thank you for posting this. I’m going to try it, though the knitting pattern doesn’t seems to match the picture (brim part).
Was there a nickname for the Moriarty hat?
