The abbreviation stands for “one-of-a-kind”. It originated in 1949 in the yachting world where boat builders were allowed to enter multiple yachts in the regatta as long as they produced no more than one of a kind. Since then the acronym has been adopted by artists and craftsmen to indicate a piece is made by hand, as opposed to a factory production line.
