Fresh to Market Vintage: 12/10/2023

Imagine having an earworm. In this case it’s not something hideous like the dreadful, horrible, awful, no good 1974 Paul Anka song (You’re) Having My Baby or the frightfully contagious Baby Shark song. It’s something much more seasonable and much more appealing: Sisters from the 1954 holiday classic, White Christmas. It’s been running through our brain all week. Imagine the delight when we arrived here to put some relatively coherent words on the top and bottom of the fresh to market vintage selections, the first thing we see are two SISTERS!

This is clearly an omen. We’re not sure what fortuitous event it foretells, but we suspect it might be that we will soon be watching White Christmas. We do love a vintage rom-com with music and hijinks. But before we go search the cable guide/streaming services to find our first available watching opportunity, we simply must present to you this week’s fresh to market vintage.

Singing Noel Angels Salt & Pepper Set

When I first saw these darling angels, I shrieked with joy. People heard me two rooms away! That’s just the way I am. I love coming across sweet Japanese-made Christmas items that I have never seen before, and to think that they are salt and pepper shakers and not candleholders. These two are sisters with blond ponytails and looking at each other with mouths open in song. I can almost hear them…

Signed BSK Double Leaf Brooch

BSK jewelry is a bit of a mystery ad little is known about the company beyond the founders’ names and dates of patents. Along with Trifari, Napier, Monet and other makers of the time, the company produced good quality costume jewelry in a range of style. This double leaf brooch is made of pot metal and coated in gold-tone plating. Brooches make great gifts (hint, hint) as they are easy to wear and come in multitudes of shapes, sizes, and styles.

Vintage Shell Jewelry Box c 1950s

Vintage heart-shaped jewelry or treasure box that is completely covered in an intricate sea shell design, highlighted by a charming shell flower in the middle of the lid. Probably made in the 50s for a souvenir shop, this sweet little box would be a fun way to present a special piece of jewelry to someone you love (like the BSK brooch right above…hint hint).

1990s Floral Intarsia Knit Sweater

Intarsia sweaters can be a bear and a half to knit yourself. The teeny tiny charted design you have to follow is enough to furrow your brow so deep you need Botox to unfurrow it. Which is why I no longer knit intarsia sweaters. I buy them instead. What I like about this 90s sweater is that it takes inspiration from Icelandic knits and throws in a curve by making it a floral pattern instead of geometric. An argument could be made that this would be a fantastic Christmas sweater that you can wear all winter long.

That’s the fresh to market vintage lineup this week. We are always enchanted by shell art. And we too would like to know more about BSK jewelry. It’s so annoying when a good company leaves behind no internet footprints.

It’s about to get busy for the holidays, don’t be in such a tizzy that you miss our posts! Subscribe to our weekly email newsletter and you’ll get links to all our content from the previous week.

And if you’re wondering why we didn’t include a link to a video of Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen performing Sisters, it’s because we didn’t want you to click away before you got to this point. Vera-Ellen was dubbed, but we can forgive her because she and Rosemary look so amazing in those blue dresses with twirly skirts.

Speaking of twirly skirts, we have a post about them.
