Fresh to Market Vintage: 10/23/2022

Buying in bulk is an economical way to save on things you need and use. It makes good financial sense buy a 24 pack of bathroom tissue or 100 heavy duty trash bags, but neither of those purchases will bring a spark of joy to your heart. Sensible, utilitarian things rarely do. But a bulk bargain on vintage treasures, now that would put a sparkle in your eye every time you saw them. This week’s fresh to market vintage has just that, two sets of vintage wonderfulness sold in groups at good prices.

We vintage sellers sometimes sell items not usually sold in sets as a group for lots of reasons. It’s not usually done with higher priced items. But for more modestly priced things, it can make the same kind of financial sense as a bundle of loo paper. It’s not appealing for a buyer to buy a modestly priced item and then pay the same price for shipping as the item. Shipping two or more small items might be the same cost as shipping one.

So with that in mind, behold this week’s fresh to market vintage collections,  the mischief of mice and the clowning around noisemakers, as well as the doubled up flower pin and the airline coffee cups.

Two Vintage Halloween Noisemakers (c 1950s)

Two vintage Halloween noisemakers

Clowns. Even when they’re smiling, don’t you wonder what they’re up to? As a Britannica writer asks in “10 Famous Clowns: From Comical to Creepy” are they “Harmless jokers or evil lunatics?” I know these two vintage noisemakers came from a country store in rural South Dakota that closed in the early 1970s, so I’m sure they are good clowns who are eager to participate in Halloween festivities.

Mice are Nice! Collection

If a group of crows is called a murder of crows, what do we call a collection of mice? A mischief, of course! And these mice are getting into some mischief! Not many like the idea of mice in their home but might smile at these. One mouse has eaten its way through a birthday cake. Two of these can be used to hold toothpicks…perhaps near the cheese tray. A fun loving parent or grandparent can place them around the house for a holiday scavenger hunt. It also can be given as a starter collection with a Seussian poem or a short story about this Mischief.

Enamel Double Flower Brooch

While autumn has begun to set in around the rest of the country, it’s still warm here in So Cal. To that end, I intend to celebrate the warm weather as long as possible. This enamel double-flower brooch reminds me of spring, and days when the flowers begin to bloom. While there are loads of vintage enamel flower brooches, I haven’t seen one in this configuration before. I find it intriguing. I think it would be a fun addition to a scarf or hat when the weather finally starts to change.

Delta Airlines ceramic mugs

Oh for the days when even in coach class, your airline food was served on real china. These Delta airlines mugs are vintage, but not back to those days. These were probably heisted from first class or an international flight.

There is a goodly amount of vintage airline china on the vintage market. Imagine how much fun it would be to make a coffee and dessert set of china from mix and match airline pieces.
