Fresh to Market Vintage: 1/5/2025

And just like that, we are back for a new year of Sunday mornings full of fresh to market vintage. We posted holiday content from Thanksgiving until New Year’s, but we are back and happy to be posting new things in a new year.

Are we turning over a new leaf? We might be turning over old leaves with the jadeite and pearl bracelet and houseplant guides. Or we might be California dreaming, with the bracelet again and the Freeman-McFarlin vase. Or maybe we’re settling into our Victorian Era with the painted glass tumbler? Whatever we’re doing, we’re back with fresh to market vintage for you to savor.

Freeman-McFarlin Space Age Vase

Freeman-McFarlin vase

Freeman-McFarlin was a new venture for Maynard Anthony Freeman and Gerald McFarlin post WWII in the Los Angeles, CA. Freeman was the creative one and McFarlin ran the business.

This company utilized some of California ceramicist Kay Finch’s molds in 1963. Later she worked freelance for them. They made figural pieces as well as decor. The company closed, and eventually Hagen Renaker bought the production plant in 1980. So now you know at least 3 stellar potters and designers of California ceramics.

This very cool space age shaped vase is finished in what I would call burnt orange with lovely strié brush work. It plays very nicely with other California art pottery in MCM decor.

Swoboda Jadeite & Pearl Leaves Bracelet

Here is a beautiful genuine Swoboda bracelet. Maple leaf gold plated links set with jadeite chips and pearl centers. The bracelet has a safety chain and secure clasp. Marked “Swoboda” on the back. In business from the mid 1950s to late 1970s, Swoboda jewelry was made in Los Angeles using an unusual at the time process of glueing gemstone chips rather than polished and prong set gems. The technic makes these pieces stand out.

Hand Painted Victorian Tumbler c 1900

Glass Victorian Tumbler

Offering a Victorian hand-painted glass tumbler from my personal collection. This one is a deep shade of blue, hand-decorated with an enameled white floral design and peach accents. Were those Victorian ladies teetotalers? I think not.

1970s Houseplant Care Guides

set of three vintage 1970s houseplant guides

For the person who lives at the intersection of loving vintage and loving houseplants, three vintage plant care guides from the 1970s. It is amazing how many of the favorite houseplants then are favorite houseplants now. New varieties might be available, but the name remains the same.
