Fresh to Market Vintage: 1/14/2024

There is nothing better than a basic, something useful and elegant in it’s simplicity that can be used in many situations. Awesome basics that spring to mind are a pair of black pumps, a little black dress, a white platter, terra cotta plant pots, a glass vase, the white beaded necklace and the rectangular glass appetizer dishes in this week’s fresh to market vintage. You could wear those white beads with so many outfits–they are basic but far from boring. And the little dishes, imagine how great they would look with sushi or a row of cookies.

Far from basic are the elves and the etherial dandelion in lucite, also in this week’s fresh to market vintage. Those elves are a party waiting to start, and that dandelion is so delicate, captured forever just before the wind sends the seeds and their fluff blowing in the wind.

Double Strand Bead Necklace

This double strand glass bead necklace is a classic design. Two strands of beads, matinee length at 22″. Just right to go with everything from a little black dress for evening wear to a casual look of slacks and a T-shirt. The larger beaded clasp in back is marked “Japan”. A simple yet elegant necklace that’s so easy to wear.

French Horn and Saxophone Pixies/Elves

I just love selling figurines that are musical, whether they be animals, pixies, bugs or even humans. These two pointy eared elves are playing the french horn and the saxophone and behind them is a very large instrument that is 7 1/2 inches high. They were made in the 50s by Lipper and Mann in Japan. Alas their cold painted red enamel has seen better times. They can be updated with fresh paint to make them nice again. I have heard they both have a good ear for music.

Lucite Encased Dandelion Paperweight c 1960s

One of my favorite childhood memories is the simple act of making a wish on a dandelion. This vintage lucite paperweight provides a permanent reminder of that memory and one that’s useful too. If you too are a fan of this versatile flowering plant, you might enjoy reading “The Meaning of Dandelions and Symbolism”, a blog post on the Flower Chimp site.

Rectangular Glass Appetizer Plates

Another week, another mystery. What was the original use these cool little rectangular glass dishes? They came from the estate of a scientist and were in her workshop. They are heavy glass, and have a slight yellow/green color cast similar to vintage clear Pyrex. I could see using them in the art room as paint palettes or to hold beading components. But what I can really see using them for is serving appetizers and desserts.
