Fresh to Market Vintage: 08/10/2025

Although kitsch can make itself at home in every room of the house, the place it flourishes most is the kitchen. Whether in a modern kitchen takes itself very seriously with  fancy granite and ornate cabinetry or in a retro-influenced kitchen, kitsch can make itself right at home. This week’s fresh to market vintage has two pieces that would make any kitchen sassier.

So much of what Holt Howard produced will bring a smile to your face. There are some serious pieces, void of whimsy, but we try to block those from our minds. We love their kitty shaker. And we love a good kitsch plate with a snarky edge. Either one would make a killer housewarming gift.

Perhaps you’re not feeling kitschy this week. That’s fine, because this week’s fresh to market vintage has things for you too.

Holt Howard Cozy Kitten Sugar Shaker

Early last September, I came across a seller who was trying to get folks to look at his deceased aunt’s ceramic cat collection. I almost squealed out loud when I saw a Holt Howard powder cleanser cat. Of course bought her. At the same flea market last week, I found the powder cleanser’s sister at the same seller’s table. He told me she had more of these cats, and he just needs to go through her collection (wrapped carefully and boxed up) to find them. The serendipity of it all! I could not believe that he was there for hours and nobody with a penchant for Holt Howard had snapped her up! Fingers crossed for my next visit!

Handmade Painted Match Holder c 1900s

A primitive, handmade match holder made of paper mache, possibly a child’s art project. Mounted on a repurposed board that was once red, it boasts its original greenish-grey painted finish. Good vintage condition given its age. Some loss of paint and cracking, which only contributes to its charm.

Green & Blue Sterling Three Stone Dangle Earrings

These sweet earrings catch the light and movement just enough to elicit a smile, but not so much as to be garish. If you want a bit of color but aren’t one to make a loud statement with your jewelry, these earrings are for you. They are sterling silver with beautifully faceted cut stones in shades of green and blue. The styling is timeless just in case you don’t always wear your vintage love out and proud. They work just as well with contemporary outfits.

1950s This Is My House Cheeky Plate

A few weeks ago, we had a post on mid century vintage wooden kitsch. But the world of kitsch plates, ah, we have yet to explore that. In case you were wondering, I did cackle madly, clutch it to my chest and prance to the checkout when I found this plate.

We are having some serious daydreams about that match holder hanging in a nook with some vintage millinery flowers tucked into it. And we are thinking about where we could go wearing those earrings (answer: ANYWHERE!).
