Fresh to Market Vintage: 02/13/2022

This week’s fresh to market vintage has a collection within the collection. Mary Ellen’s dragon grouping is the answer to both a collector’s dream and a seller’s dilemma. For the buyer, it’s a chance to add an instant collection to an existing one or to give a new collector a jump start.

On the seller’s side, we often come across small independent things that absolutely demand to be sold as a set. We do all the work and price it to reflect the volume of pieces. But, for all the times the lot all goes off to one buyer, rup roh, there’s an equal number of times that a buyer contacts us to ask for one piece from the set. That’s always a hard call. Selling that one piece means redoing the listing including the photography. But making that one buyer happy…it’s hard not to honor the ask.

The good news is only one of us has to worry about that with our fresh to market vintage picks this week. (But don’t tell Mary Ellen we said so!)

Here Be Dragons

I love it when a collection comes together! Whether they are frightening, teeny tiny, ready to spit fire, spice up a meal, or even be a character in an episode of The Office, here be dragons. Myths, legends and fables feature the dragon. If you were born in the year of the dragon. it symbolizes power, nobleness, honor, luck, and success in traditional Chinese culture. The Dragon is a supernatural being with no parallel for talent and excellence.

Primitive Hand Carved Wall Box c. 1920s

Primitive folk art wall box

In case you haven’t noticed, I do love wall boxes, the folky the better. My theory is this particular piece was made by a child as an art project based on the lack of sophistication in the carving and the construction. Those attributes are what make it appealing to me. The size of this box makes me think it could have hung by the front door as a spot for visitors to deposit their calling cards.

Pink Plastic Bow Ring

Does your love, love kitsch? Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be serious or expensive. Show your love your fun side and give her a little kitsch with this vintage plastic pink bow ring. It’ll add a finishing touch to a cute retro outfit and a smile to her face too. Take her to her favorite burger joint and finish the day with a walk in the park. Now that’s my kind of Valentine!

Cristal d’Arques-Durand Versailles Champagne Coupes

It doesn’t have the cache of Waterford Crystal, but Cristal D’Arques-Durand makes a fine piece of stemware you can use every day without worry because pieces are beautiful, durable, plentiful and affordable. This particular pattern, Versailles, was made for 31 years from 1968-1999. That’s a good long run. And although it was sold in better department stores, it has always been a good value–nice quality at a friendly price. Now that they are popping up with regularity on the vintage market, it’s a good time to start your collection.
