Fresh to Market Vintage: 09/03/2023

It’s happened. September 1 was the first day of meteorological fall. We can hear the clock ticking down to the first frost or, heaven forbid, the first snowfall. But this week’s fresh to market vintage keeps those events far in the future by channeling the warmth of autumn in color and design.

Amber earrings, a fall essential to go with your brown and green and russet sweaters. A sweet story continues with Bjorn Wiinblad’s tiles (another tile from the series was featured in fresh to market vintage a month ago). The mourning dove is perfect for a vintage fall vignette. And cooking from Provence will will your belly with delicious and your soul with gratefulness.

We know there’s still plenty of warm days ahead for the northern part of the country and a breath of coolness (hopefully) for the southern tier that’s been cooking all summer. But, like the meteorologists, it is time to start thinking about fall.

 Sterling And Amber Earrings

Small but mighty seems to describe these earrings in my mind. Their diminutive size belies the elegance and simplicity of their design. Hung from long kidney wires with locking backs, each one features a tiny flower pod at the top of an oval cabochon of polished amber with beautiful inclusions that catch the light. Marked only 925 on the backs there is no signature although they appear to be handmade by an artisan as they are not quite perfect. This only adds to their charm.

 Bjorn Wiinblad Tile Apples

This is the October design for a calendar of love series created by Bjorn Wiinblad. They got married in March and by October you can see that they are expecting their first child. This tile is named Paradis (paradise) and her lap is full of beautiful apples that he is picking for her. I also equate this image to the start of our autumnal months, when early apples are now being sold, soon to follow are cider and apple butter and those delicious apple pies. This is such a romantic story told in 12 tiles. Collect one if it touches your heart or find all twelve. These were made by Nymolle in Denmark in the 1970s.

 Herter’s Mourning Dove Decoy c 1940s

Vintage Herter's mourning dove decoy

Mounted on a clothespin, this paper mache mourning dove decoy was manufactured by Herter’s Sporting Goods of Waseca, MN in the 1940s. George Herter, known as an eccentric entrepreneur, began building an empire marketing outdoor gear in 1935 using mailorder catalogs which have now become collector’s items in their own right. Herter sold his business which included eight retail storefronts to Cabela’s in 1975 and died in 1984 without ever granting an interview.

1990s Recipes from Provence cookbook

When you think of the cooking of Provence, you think of hearty stews and cassoulets and warm rich flavors. In short, the perfect kind of recipes to take advantage of the fresh fall produce. This translated cookbook is composed in handwritten recipes with quirky little pen and ink illustrations. If we have to ease from summer to fall, it’s never bad to have tasty ways to do it.
