Autumn’s Delights – Vintage Picks of the Week

Welcome Autumn in all of your glory or subtlety! My husband and I were just talking about our favorite seasons. We both cannot handle the heat and humidity of summer. To be honest, I love the first deep snow of winter and dislike it from that point on, and really don’t care for early spring for the same reason. He loves winter.

We both love autumn. It reminds me of going back to college and the rides we would take into the western Massachusetts hills or to the almost vacant beaches of Maine and New Hampshire. Going into antique shops or flea markets on our way from here to anywhere was a treasure hunt. Hot cider, apple pies or fritters…these things still delight us in our 4th decade together.

Small Ceramic Lidded Pumpkin

I love simplicity in most of my home decor in the fall and allow the outdoors to be the most colorful with all the foliage in a riot of colors. I would use this lovely little vessel to hold wildflowers or garden flowers held in place with a wire frog and lean the lid alongside it. Or maybe I can arrange some miniature multicolored dried corn cobs inside it and use the husks as accents. This would be a pretty display holding smaller branches of leaves , twigs or even bittersweet as long as I keep it away from the pets and small children. This charmer is offered on Etsy by Cape Fodder for $20.

1960s Columbia Firebolt Bike

I think one of the best ways to enjoy the brisk weather and the colorful scenery is to slow down and go for a walk or a bike ride. When we go for a foliage drive, one of us is looking at the road and can’t fully enjoy the scenery. If we pedal along a quiet road and yes, you can find them out our way, you can stop to admire the smallest things and also to admire the bigger picture. Cycling a road next to a red maple swamp is our idea of heaven! I would love to ride this particular bike because I never had one in the 60s but I can have one now in my 70s. The Etsy shop, Elm Brook Farm is offering this green Firebolt for $385.

Bakelite 1940s Carved Yellow Bar Brooch

I think most if not all of the bakelite colors are found in New England’s autumn color palette. I admire both the color and the asymmetry of this brooch and can see it featured on my denim jacket, boiled wool vest or an aran knit sweater. I realize I don’t own any bakelite and if I get something it would most likely be a bracelet or a pin like this. It is offered by Aunt Eddies Closet for $44 on Etsy.

Vintage 90s Frye Knee High Leather Boots

I just pulled my Frye boots out from storage and can’t wait to wear them. These would look great with skinny jeans and a longer shirt and sweater or coat if it is really brisk. Flat-heeled boots suit me. I can go for hours shopping at farm stands or pop-up yard sales or even sitting at a fire ring with friends. I keep my boots clean and brushed and treated with a conditioner and they still look like they are new but now they are old friends. If the boots suit you, they are in Mezcal And Leather for $85 on Etsy.
