5 Vintage Ideas for the Dog Days of Summer

Here in New England, we have had many, many days of hot humid weather, and, as some folks say, we are in the dog days of summer. One would think this means days when dogs are listless or cranky, but the expression is actually from astronomy. Dog days are about the rising of the dog star Sirius, which lasts about 40 days, from July 3 to August 11. I am quite afraid that this year this heat will last days longer. I thought I’d share some items and give you some ideas of how not only to get through this but to actually enjoy it.

Stay Inside and Read!

Find a cool and comfy spot to enjoy your book along with some iced tea, lemonade or coffee. August Wilson, award winning playwright and author, wrote Fences. This is a story of a former baseball star and his family in Pittsburgh, PA in the 50s and 60s. This book is a first printing and is available for $120 in MJNYFinds on Etsy.

Go Stargazing!

A very hot day may have a cool, cloudless evening, which is just perfect for shooting stars and a sky full of wonder. Throw this waterproof blanket on the grass in the backyard if you have good dark sky viewing or take it somewhere safe with others and just enjoy the experience. It is very romantic for couples and also high on the family fun chart.  OneAnotherGoods made this comfy item for Etsy which is $42.99

Wear A Linen Shirt!

Linen and linen cotton blends are cool on your skin, and the long sleeves can shade you from the sun. I also find this casual collar quite nice on a man’s shirt. Great with a pair of jeans. For $30 on Etsy, available in the shop of FieldIL.

Eat Something Cool!

This tomato-shaped tureen celebrates one of the best items of the summer garden. Gazpacho is a cold tomato soup that you can make yourself and serve very, very cold. Your family or guests will shiver with delight! This tempting tomato tureen is offered at $62 on Etsy by ShepherdandIvy.

Finish Your Day with Sweet Simple Watermelon!

Put on this great apron to spare your clothes whilst cutting and serving a large watermelon for the crowd after the BBQ. My husband likes watermelon seed spitting contests. I have no reason to do that and like mine seedless. Watermelon is cooling and sweet and very light on the tummy. The HardlyAbleStable wants to see you wear this at the table and has it priced on Etsy for $29.
