If you weren’t lucky enough to be in Germany for Oktoberfest (which starts in mid September despite the name), you have a second chance to raise your stein today on German-American Day. Inked into existence by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, Deutsch-Amerikanischer Tag honors a small group of Germans who emigrated to the United States, Philadelphia specifically, when we were still thirteen colonies, back in 1683.

After you’ve dusted off your beautiful vintage stoneware stein and filled it with a stout German brew, you need something to say as you hoist it in the air and clink it with the steins of your favorite celebrants. Here’s five German toasts to help you celebrate.

Ein Prost! This is as basic as it gets. Translation: A Toast! and/or Cheers!

Das Leben ist bezaubernd, man muss es nur durch die richtige Brille sehen. Life ist wonderful, you just need to see it through the right glasses. (from Cellarmonk.com)

Genieße das Leben ständig! Du bist länger tot als lebendig! Constantly enjoy life! You’re longer dead than alive! (from Cellarmonk.com)

Sie nicht Ihr Pier auf meinem Teppich verschüttet. Don’t spill your beer on my rug.

Rosen sind rot, Veilchen sind blau, Lassen Sie uns ein Bier. Roses are red, Violets are blue, Let’s have a beer.

And a bonus:

Heben Sie ein Seltzer mit Kalk auf, um alle unsere Gesundheit. Raise up a seltzer with lime, to all our health.

Because the designated driver should be the toast of the town for sure!
